About the New Faculty Institute

The New Faculty Institute is an annual orientation held in the fall for new community and technical college faculty and staff. The Institute is designed to enhance student learning and facilitate faculty transition to a new role in the Washington community and technical college system.

Institute Purpose

  • Provide practical topics, instructional strategies and implications for teaching that convey how people learn and promote active engagement of learners.
  • Acquaint faculty with the diversity of students and faculty at Washington State's two-year colleges.
  • Expand faculty perspectives by interacting and exchanging ideas with peers.
  • Communicate that colleges are part of a system designed to provide significant learning experiences for students and support for individual colleges.
  • Present information and resources on legal issues, tenure, and retirement planning.

Registration

Each Washington community and technical college has a primary contact that coordinates new faculty registrations for their campus. Faculty interested in attending the Institute should contact their campus's primary contactPDF. By August 25 the primary contact from each institution will email Jackie Eppler-Clark a list with participant names, college email address, their disciplines, and any special dietary needs.

Registration Fee

The registration fee for this event is $125. The fee includes a lite breakfast on Day 1, a full breakfast on Day 2, lunch on both days, break refreshments, and Institute materials. Registration deadline for the 2015 Institute is August 25. Checks should be made payable to SBCTC and mailed to SBCTC, PO Box 42495, Olympia WA 98504-2495. Payment cannot be accepted at the Institute.

Attendees should park in the free Event Parking located behind Building 23. From Steilacoom Boulevand, turn left on Lakewood Avenue and right onto Perimeter St SW. Follow the signs to Event Parking. .

Lunch with Administrators

A highlight of the event is when college presidents & vice presidents of instruction join the new faculty for lunch. This year's Lunch with Administrators will be at noon on Friday, September 4, in the atrium of the McGavick Conference Center. The cost of the lunch for administrators is $20. Checks should be made payable to SBCTC and mailed to SBCTC, PO Box 42495, Olympia WA 98504-2495. Payment cannot be accepted at the Institute.
