The Manager Training Program offers trainings available to supervisors and mangers. A
taskforce comprised of the follow Human Resource professionals has volunteered to
develop courses for this program: Dave Halverstadt, Taskforce Chair;
Mark Cassidy; Tami Willett; Stephen Smith; Kathy Vedvick.
The topics below are identified as being useful to new and current managers. The
intent is to offer a menu of options from which colleges can choose from to meet
individual and institution needs. Courses may be combined into half day sessions or offered
as periodic stand alone training sessions.
||Provides an overview of college and system structures and roles.
|College Mission and Values
||Participants will learn of the college’s role in the community
and with students and explore how employees and their units contribute towards meeting mission
||An overview of the state and college policies and practices related
to employment. Includes a review the types of employees working at the district; employment
governance structures; services provided by HR, payroll and benefit offices; state retirement
and health care benefit; tenure and a supervisors’ role & related responsibilities.
||Participants will explore the differences between managing and leadership
and get practical suggestions on how to schedule work; organize workload and time, and motivate
individuals. Participants will also discuss working with colleagues, union leads, & executive
|Communicating with Employees
||Provides information on the importance of regular communications
with employees and provides a variety of strategies.
|Effective Work teams
||Provides participants with a variety of strategies for developing
productive work teams. Participants will discuss how to effectively motivate employee groups
and manage conflict.
||Provides participants with basics of developing and managing office/department
|Purchasing and Central Receiving
||Provides an overview of purchasing/contracting processes.
|Supervisor’s Legal Responsibilities
||In general terms, describes supervisors responsibilities related
to risk management.
|Ethics in the Workplace/Public Records
||Provides participants an overview of state and institution ethics & public
||Provides an overview of college responsibilities & structures
related to college bargaining units (classified, faculty and exempt). Introduction to collective
bargaining agreements and primary provisions.
||Discussion of college diversity program and policies. Clarifies
managers responsibilities related to diversity.
|Harassment and Discrimination
||Provides overview of college policies and procedures related to
discrimination, including sexual harassment.
||Provides a review of a variety of employment policies that are primarily
implemented by supervisors and managers, including FMLA, ADA, affirmative action, Drug Free Workplace,
Workplace Violence, etc.
|Work hours and leave
||Provides general information concerning employees’ work hours,
overtime eligibility, accrual and use of leave, etc. Provides strategies for use in helping
employees maintain good attendance and manage their leave.
|Classified Performance Evaluation System
||Participants will learn about the PDP process and how to provide
|Manager’s role in recruiting and hiring
||College processes and manager responsibilities related to recruitment
and hiring will be described. Job descriptions, outreach, diversity, interviewing and reference
checking are issues that will be addressed
|Corrective and Disciplinary Actions
||Participants will discuss their role and collective bargaining agreement
provisions addressing disciplinary and corrective actions. Tools will be provided for use
in supporting and sustaining actions.
